Hello! My name is Dr. Tim Eagan, and I have been a licensed Clinical Psychologist since 2013. However, I have been training and working in helping professions for nearly 20 years. Most people in my field will say that they came into this line of work because they wanted to “help people”. While I also enjoy the idea of helping others, when I think back to the answer I came up with years ago when trying to decide which career path to choose and asking myself what I like to do, I can vividly remember saying “I like working WITH people”, and the reason for this is because I genuinely LIKE and RESPECT people.
Since then, I have had the good fortune and pleasure of working with countless people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. What I have found during that time, regardless of background or circumstances, is that the majority of people I have encountered benefit the most from: EMPATHY, WARMTH, GENUINENESS, REFRAINING FROM JUDGMENT and CONSISTENCY. These core principles are the foundation from which I work with and support people in achieving their full potential in therapy, and more importantly in their life, through SELF-ACCEPTANCE. While additional techniques and coping strategies also have significant value and can be explored, these core principles are highly consistent with who I am as a person, and thus are an integral part of my therapeutic experience.
People coming to see me can be struggling with an array of difficulties including emotional and relational distress, low self-esteem, feeling as though there is something “wrong” with them, as well as people experiencing consequences in their life related to substance use (i.e. alcohol, drugs). Regardless of a person’s specific struggle, I have found a common thread to be trying to meet the demands of others in addition to the demands we place upon ourselves. The conflict or contradictions between these two forces are a significant source of distress and turmoil in life. I can help you to find peace and balance in this, not by telling you what type of person you “should” be, but by helping you to understand and accept who you are and supporting you in being the person YOU want to be. Remember, while I am the expert in psychology, no one knows you better than you know yourself, and you will always be the top expert on YOU.
